03. DISCOGRAPHY: PEARL JAM

So um. You'll probably think I'm insane by the end of this post, and you'll probably be right. Because here, on the seventeenth anniversary of their debut album, Ten (and the twelfth of No Code), I've uploaded every single Pearl Jam and Pearl Jam-related track I have. I'm posting a number of videos (that I did not upload, fortunately for my sanity) as well, and as soon as I get in touch with my DVD-ripping friend, I'll be uploading their DVDs and other appearances, too.

Notes:
- Albums are zipped uploaded to Mediafire; singles and individual tracks are uploaded to Box.
- Everything is mp3, 128kbps, unless otherwise noted. Bigger files would kill my hard drive, sorry. :(
- I was going to upload each individual album track to Box, but it's being kind of fickle about what files it likes to upload, so I'm going to hold off on that for now. If there's a specific track you want, just let me know. Also, if another Box link isn't working, let me know and I'll see what I can do.
- I've added my commentary for each album and a couple of B-sides. Take it or leave it, just my opinion.
- This is literally everything by PJ and its respective members that I own, digitally or otherwise, but this is also just what I have--and I don't have everything. I am always looking for more. If you have anything to contribute, please leave me a link in a comment and I will add it to the post. With credit, of course. :)
- Most of the live shows and demo tape recordings I got from various sources on the web that are now lost to me. I know the boys aren't too picky about their stuff getting thrown around digitally, but if there's anything up here that I should credit for, or that shouldn't be redistributed (i.e. personal recordings, &c.), please let me know and I'll adjust accordingly.
- I'll link to this again at the end, but if this post is a bit overwhelming, I've uploaded a sampling of songs here so you can get a taste of the band before you douse yourself in it. :)

One final note outside the cut before I throw a whole bunch of music at you--this post took me FOREVER to rip, upload and code, so COMMENT IF YOU TAKE ANYTHING. Please, thank you, and enjoy. :)

STUDIO ALBUMS
{folder on mediafire}

Ten (1991)
[Once / Even Flow / Alive / Why Go / Black / Jeremy / Oceans / Porch / Garden / Deep / Release]
.zipped

Probably one of the most solid debut albums in history, the only bad thing about it is that the timing of its release meant that Pearl Jam got lumped in with the "grunge" bands--which, for the record, they are most decidedly not. Every song is a work of art, imho, and it sounds just as fresh now as I'm sure it did in 1991. It's hard to believe the album was released less than a year after the band got together--though, in their defense, Stone and Jeff had been playing together since they were teenagers. Jeremy was the big hit, Porch is my favorite. Alive--which was literally written with the help of the US Postal Service--still holds up, and they play Even Flow at almost every show (though it's much faster now). If you're looking for a place to start, this is it.

*Note: I also have the German import version of this album, which is essentially the same save for three extra tracks tacked on the end, which I've uploaded to Box: Alive (live), Wash, Dirty Frank.

Vs. (1993)
[Go / Animal / Daughter / Glorified G / Dissident / WMA / Blood / Rearviewmirror / Rats / Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town / Indifference]
.zipped

Originally called "Five Against One" (and originally released with no title on the spine), this album sold almost a million copies in its first week. That might be why it's overlooked by a lot of fans, but I think it's a much better record than Ten. Again, every song still holds up today. The first three songs are beautifully sequenced--the 1-2 punch of Go and Animal knock you out, then Daughter picks up the pieces. Dissident was my favorite song for a while, as was Rearviewmirror. Small Town is one of the most beautiful songs, lyrically and musically, in their catalog. I'd say this is a must-have album, regardless of whether you're a fan or not.

Vitalogy (1994)
[Last Exit / Spin the Black Circle / Not For You / Tremor Christ / Nothingman / Whipping / Pry, To / Corduroy / Bugs / Satan's Bed / Better Man / Aye Davanita / Immortality / Hey Foxymophandlemama, That's Me (Stupid Mop)]
.zipped

Named after a late 19th century health-advice book, this is arguably their best record. I've nicknamed it their "I hate being famous" record, because Not for You, Pry, To, Corduroy (one of their best songs, imho) and Satan's Bed are all about that very subject. Spin the Black Circle won a Grammy. Better Man is one of the best songs ever written--Eddie wrote it when he was 16, about his mother, and it could have been written yesterday. The last track is the only PJ track I cannot listen to all the way through--it's like Revolution No. 9, it just creeps me out. The feel of the album is very different than the first two--it takes a little while to get used to, but it's totally worth it.

No Code (1996)
[Sometimes / Hail, Hail / Who You Are / In My Tree / Smile / Off He Goes / Habit / Red Mosquito / Lukin / Present Tense / Mankind / I'm Open / Around the Bend]
.zipped

Here we have PJ's "experimental" album. Each individual song is great in and of itself, but the whole thing feels a little thrown-together. Mankind features Stone, not Eddie, on lead vocals. I'm Open is half-sung, half-spoken. Present Tense is moody and pensive; Hail, Hail and Habit are hard and fast; Who You Are is, in a word, harmonious. Smile is one of their best songs. Lukin is much, much better live. Worth a shot, but I'd listen to their other stuff before trying this one, or nab a song or two at a time.

Yield (1998)
[Brain of J. / Faithfull / No Way / Given To Fly / Wishlist / Pilate / Do the Evolution / [untitled] / MFC / Low Light / In Hiding / Push Me, Pull Me / All Those Yesterdays]
.zipped

My favorite album, if we look at the ratio of songs I love to songs on the album, which in this case is closest to 1. Much more cohesive than No Code, much more mellow than Vitalogy, the boys start to return to their roots here. Rumors are that they nearly broke up between No Code and this record, and "Yield" refers to their "giving way" to each other and working things out. It shows. Given To Fly is my favorite song from anything ever, period. Wishlist is simple and gorgeous. Faithfull soars. Do the Evolution punches you in the gut. The riff at the beginning of In Hiding makes me want to cry. Push Me, Pull Me is mostly spoken word. MFC (mini fast car) rolls along. Again, a very different feel than their earlier records, but more digestible than No Code.

Binaural (2000)
[Breakerfall / Gods' Dice / Evacuation / Light Years / Nothing As It Seems / Thin Air / Insignificance / Of the Girl / Grievance / Rival / Sleight of Hand / Soon Forget / Parting Ways]
.zipped

I didn't fully appreciate how good this record was until I took a long break (say, two years or so) from it and listened to it again. Still part of their "experimental" phase, it takes a few listens to get used to the feel of it. Like No Code, each individual song is great, but unlike NC, the sequencing is well-done. Here starts their really outwardly political song writing--Insignificance, Grievance, Rival, and Soon Forget all refer to big events (Kosovo, WTO protests, Columbine) or big names (Bill Gates, presumably). Light Years is a lyrical masterpiece. Parting Ways is sad and gorgeous. A bit of an acquired taste, but still very excellent.

Riot Act (2002)
[Can't Keep / Save You / Love Boat Captain / Cropduster / Ghost / I Am Mine / Thumbing My Way / You Are / Get Right / Green Disease / Help Help / Bu$hleaguer / 1/2 Full / Arc / All or None]
.zipped

And here we have PJ's Political Album, all captialized. Even the title is a double reference to the Riot Act and the Patriot Act. Of course, this record also came very soon after two huge tragedies--the death of nine fans during their June 30, 2000 show in Roskilde (which almost ended the band), and 9/11. There are lyrical references all over the place, and Arc, Eddie has said, was the only way he could express his grief for those events. (It's gorgeous, by the way.) Much like No Code, the individual songs are solid, but the sequencing is a bit off. Save You is one of their best to date. Get Right is my favorite on the album. A lot of people love Love Boat Captain, but I'm not particularly fond of it. Bu$hleaguer beats you over the head with the message that Bush is bad--which, I don't even like him and I got sick of this song real fast. Nab this one just before you nab No Code, it'll warm you up for it.

Pearl Jam [aka Avacado Songs] (2006)
[Life Wasted / World Wide Suicide / Comatose / Severed Hand / Marker in the Sand / Parachutes / Unemployable / Big Wave / Gone / Wasted Reprise / Army Reserve / Come Back / Inside Job]
.zipped
**reuploaded**

What a fucking fantastic album. No, seriously. Rolling Stone said this was PJ's best album in ten years (that is, since Vitalogy) and they were damn right. It has the subtlety of Binaural, the impact of Ten, the mellow feel of Yield. It's their first record not on the Epic label, and you can tell the boys are all in a very different place. When World Wide Suicide came out, I could not stop listening to it. Marker in the Sand blows me away every time I hear it. Gone is perfect. Eddie's voice on Come Back makes me want to weep. Inside Job grows on you after a couple of listenings. If you like their earlier stuff, I highly recommend this one.

COMPILATIONS

Lost Dogs (b-sides and rarities)
[tracklisting]
disc 1: .zipped | disc 2: .zipped
A lot of the B-sides that are on this album--the version is different than the actual B-side track. For most of the songs, I like the version that appears on the single itself, all of which I own are listed below for comparison. I'm also fairly sure that I'm Still Here is included on some foreign versions, but I've only seen it as an individual track. (It's spoken-word and incredible, by the way.)

Lost Dogs Internal Promo
[Anything in Between / In the Moonlight / Fatal / Sad / Wishing Well / Hitchhikers / Puzzle and Game / Education / Sweet Lew / Sunburn / Hold On / Just a Girl / Alone / Brother / Don't Gimme No Lip / Bee Girl / Against the 70s / Jeremy (new)]

Some tracks that were left off the final version of Lost Dogs. Descriptions can be found here.

Rearviewmirror (greatest hits 1991-2003)

A good place to start if you want a sampling of everything through Riot Act, though some of the remixes sound a little off to me.

TEN CLUB HOLIDAY SINGLES

Perpetuating their love for vinyl, every year (except for 1994) at Christmas (or depending on when it actually gets released, Easter), the band sends out a 45rpm single to the members of their fanclub (10C). They feature unreleased originals or covers, new songs, or live recordings, usually with guest artists. I personally own vinyl copies of 2003 through 2007, but have all of them in digital format.

COLLABORATIONS / SIDE PROJECTS
{folder on mediafire}

Neil Young // Mirror Ball
.zipped
Neil recorded this album using PJ as his backing band.

Neil Finn // 7 Worlds Collide
[Take a Walk | Stuff and Nonsense | I See Red | Parting Ways | Paradise (Wherever You Are)]
.zipped
Highlights from a week-long celebration of the music of Neil Finn. Eddie sings on the first four, plays ukulele on the last one. After uploading the .zip file, I realized there was an extra copy of "Take a Walk." Just roll with it. :P

Stone Gossard // Bayleaf
.zipped
Stone is still the only one to release a solo record.

Eddie Vedder and the Walmer High School Choir // The Molo Sessions
.zipped
Awesome recordings of PJ songs and (mostly) traditional South African music. I highly, highly recommend.

I am actually sorely lacking in side projects--I don't have any Brad, Mad Season, Wellwater Conspiracy, Hovercraft, or Three Fish. I would adore some, if you have it. :)

LIVE ALBUMS
{folder on mediafire}

Pearl Jam is, if nothing else, an amazing live band. They've always been very good to their fans regarding live shows, allowing taping since the very beginning. In late 1998, they released Live on Two Legs, a sampling of live shows from their 1998 tour. In 2001, they released soundboard recordings of all 72 shows from their 2000 tour. And it's just been downhill from there. Here's a little sampling.

Live on Two Legs

Live at Benaroya Hall (10/22/03)
[setlist]
disc 1: .zipped | disc 2: .zipped
An acoustic show to benefit Youth Care. If you download nothing else from this show, please take Lukin. It's a well-known fact that Eddie mumbles and makes up words on the spot, but this is an attempt to let people hear the words to a song that is usually so loud and fast that it doesn't matter. As a fan, I find it kind of hilarious, but it's also a great recording. :)

Live in NYC (12/31/92)
[setlist]
.zipped
This was an exclusive with the pre-order of their latest album, Pearl Jam. It's a good show with an early performance of "Daughter," though I'm pretty sure Eddie calls it "Brother" and says "brother" instead of "daughter," which is bizarre because Brother is another song entirely. Huh.

*I do own Live at the Gorge, but one of the discs has a big scratch. I don't think it's fair to upload only what I can (a five-song chunk is unplayable, boo), so I will only upload this if and when I get it fixed. Sorry. :(

LIVE SHOWS

I also have the following shows, and will upload them to Megaupload, by request (except for the 6/25/08 show, which I already have on Mediafire). Recording quality varies (especially with the earlier shows), but most are fairly good. The three starred shows are "my shows"--shows I went to. They each have a special place in my heart. :)

THE GOSSMAN PROJECT / THE MAMASAN TRILOGY

THE STORY

In early 1990, Mother Love Bone lead singer Andy Wood died of a heroin overdose. His bandmates Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament decided, later that year, to go on making music. With newly recruited guitarist Mike McCready, all they needed was a drummer and a singer. They recorded a demo tape of instrumental tracks with then-Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron and sent it out to their friends in hopes of finding the two missing members of their new band.

One tape ended up in the hands of the former drummer for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jack Irons, who declined the position of drummer, but passed the tape along to his friend in San Diego, Eddie Vedder. Legend has it that after listening to the tape obsessively all night, Vedder went surfing, then scrawled down some lyrics and, following a few hours sleep, dubbed his vocals over three instrumental tracks and sent it back to Seattle. He called the three tracks a "mini opera" that told a story of a young man being slowly destroyed by his own demons.

The three in Seattle heard the dubbed tape, loved it, and had him come up for a week of rehearsals (they had already recruited local drummer Dave Krusen), which ended in a show at the Off Ramp on October 22, 1990. They called themselves Mookie Blaylock, after the New Jersey Nets pointguard. By the time they put out an album, Ten (which, by the by, was Blaylock's jersey number) in August 1991, they'd changed their names to Pearl Jam. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Just one little note--most of the tracks on the original tape eventually became Pearl Jam songs in one way or another (I've footnoted them), but "Dollar Short" is literally a karaoke version of "Alive". It's a little freaky.

VIDEOS

OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEOS

After Jeremy, the band swore they'd never do another music video. Do the Evolution is animated by Todd McFarlane, creator of Spawn. The Riot Act videos (I Am Mine, Save You, LBC) and World Wide Suicide are "performance" videos. Life Wasted is the first "real video" they've done in a while, but it's more of an artistic expression than an ad for their album.

Unfortunately, most of these have embedding disabled, so I'll have to link. Oh well.

LIVE VIDEOS

Pearl Jam is a freaking fantastic live band, and these videos don't really do them justice. These are just a few I have picked out from Youtube; there are a gazillion more out there on the web, including quite a few at PearlJamLive.com.

Release at the first show, 22 October 1990

State of Love and Trust, MTV Unplugged, 1992

Jeremy at PinkPop, 1992

Animal at the MTV VMAs, 1993

Grievance at Letterman, 2000

Other Letterman appearances: Hail, Hail (1996) | Wishlist (1998) | Save You (2002) | I Am Mine (2002) | Masters of War (2004) | Life Wasted (2006)

The New World (with Tim Robbins), 2004

Video is a little out of sync, but it's an AMAZING performance.

Given To Fly in Argentina, 2005

Can't Keep (Ed solo), 2005

Better Man at MSG, 2008 (I was at this show!)

AND THAT'S THE END! If any links are broken/dead/missing/wrong, please let me know. Sometimes Box tells me something is uploaded properly when it's not, and I think I've gone a bit cross-eyed due to coding this whole thing, so I'm sure I've missed something...

I know this is REALLY overwhelming, so if you're looking for a "starter kit," I've put one up here. It has what I think are their best, most accessible songs. Then if you like what you hear, come on back and take anything you want. :)

One last thing--if you'd like to link to this post, please do! I am all about spreading the Jam. Here, I'll even give you a handy textbox with that nifty graphic I made--hotlink all you want. :)

You do realize that you are the best thing to come along since sliced bread, right? This is one awesome compilation. I think I'll just sit right here for the rest of the night and drool as I download.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!

Took Man of the hour because it was the only official release I was missing.

Also took Into the Wild.

I have Above by Mad Season. Tis decent but nothing groundbreaking. However, having Mark Lanegan and Layne Staley singing on the same album against McCready guitar work is pretty sweet.

You are legendary! I already had the studio albums uploaded for a indie_exchange discography post, but this is just a work of art. I agree about 'Given to fly' - it's one of my favourite songs. I have taken live sets and unreleased stuff, plus Temple of the Dog which I've always wanted to hear (I've loved 'hunger strike' since back in the day...) Thanks so much :)

Good lord, this is amazing. And you, by extension, are also amazing.

PJ was one of those bands that I really loved in the 90's, and I still like them, but their turn toward politics really hurt the integrity of their music. It's like, ohh, look at us, we're against George Bush! How brave and courageous we are to take this stand ... that pretty much 95% of all other musicians already agree with, and also occasionally do songs about. It's sad, because that political music is always instantly dated. I will bet you any amount of money that in 20 or 30 years, people will still be listening to (most of) their 90's music, but all their political stuff will be forgotten, because the things the music discusses will no longer be relevant. Imagine, if you will, a band that had an album about Lyndon Johnson, or Richard Nixon. Apart from historical curiousity, would you want to listen to that, or the band's other work that spoke to the universal themes that PJ so beautifully captures in their non-political work?

(Sorry for the rant.)

August 28 2008, 16:12:52 UTC 3 years ago

Thanks! :D

And yeah, no, I know what you mean. I have this tendency to skip over most of their political stuff anyway, or take it at face value (musically). Though I'd like to think that most of their music is pretty universal--maybe that's just me. *shrug* I'll take 'em any way they come, really. :)
